      Before you play

      • Respect the museum. Walk, don't run. Keep voices low. Don't touch exhibits, and stay out of staff-only and roped-off areas.
      • Be considerate of other visitors, tours, events and tangihanga on Te Marae. If asked by staff to stop, stop.
      • Stay in the agreed levels and zones. Phones on silent. No photos where signs forbid it.
      • Agree a meet-up point and end time before you start. Mind lifts, stairs and little kids.

          How to Play

          1. Everyone opens the same web address on their phone (the host shares it). Phones stay in sync over Wi-Fi — no texting needed.
          2. Host taps Create Game, picks settings, and shares the code.
          3. Players tap Join, enter the code and their name. They appear in the host's lobby instantly.
          4. Host assigns Hider or Seeker and starts. Everyone counts down together.
          5. Hiders run and hide anywhere in the agreed levels. Seekers wait out the head start.
          6. Check in. Every few minutes each hider's phone asks them to share their spot: pick your level, tap where you are, confirm. Seekers see it appear live with its age.
          7. Tagged? The hider taps I GOT CAUGHT (or a seeker marks them). Everyone updates instantly.
          8. Game ends when all hiders are caught, time runs out, or the host ends it.

          Why floors, not GPS?

Te Papa is indoors over six levels, where phone GPS barely works. So instead you share your spot by picking a level and tapping the map — quick and accurate inside a building.

What if my phone drops off Wi-Fi?

It reconnects on its own and catches up. The timer keeps correct time because it's based on the shared start moment.
